Vital new book to help teenagers’ mental health crisis

“Young people now more than ever need tools and resources to support their mental wellbeing and help fulfil their potential. This book will be invaluable in helping them achieve this.” - Dame Kelly Holmes, double Olympic gold medallist

Taking the step from childhood to adulthood is a huge challenge for teenagers, their parents and teachers. In the time of coronavirus, young people’s mental health is under more pressure than ever.

Research by the mental health charity Young Minds found 80 per cent of those surveyed said their mental health was worse because of the impact of Covid-19.

However, a new book by Professor Paul McGee, a Sunday Times best-selling author who has spent more than 20 years working with teachers and young people, provides skills and insights to help those facing one of life’s most difficult stages.

YESSS! The S.U.M.O. Secrets to Being a Positive, Confident Teenager is a fun and practical book packed with quirky illustrations. It empowers teenage readers to develop confidence, build resilience and develop greater awareness of their emotions. Proceeds from the book will go to support Young Minds.

The guidance in Paul’s best-selling book SUMO (Shut Up, Move On) has helped thousands of people to build the confidence and motivation to overcome life’s challenges.

With a new definition of “Stop, Understand, Move On”, Yesss! is a new SUMO book aimed at a younger audience and explains:

  • How to take responsibility for your life, and to own and understand your feelings
  • How to recover from setbacks and develop perseverance
  • How to aim high, set goals and dare to dream
  • That it’s OK not to be OK!

Paul is a keynote speaker and a visiting Professor at the University of Chester. He is also a father of two and he says: “The teenage years can be challenging at the best of times, never mind during a global pandemic.

“My aim is to provide young people with the tools, inspiration and encouragement to believe that whatever they are going through, they can get through and go on to achieve their potential.”

About the Illustrator:

Fiona Osborne works as a mural artist and illustrator under her company name: One Red Shoe. She has designed and painted work for Aardman Animation, Frederick Warne & Co., Historic Royal Palaces, the Royal Mint, TFL, Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, festivals, town centres and restaurants, as well as primary, secondary and SED schools. From Grade I Medieval buildings with moats to modern architecture, Forensic Mental Health units, album covers, ten-metre-high gable-ends on wind-shaken scaffolding, and haunted underground passageways.

It's the kind of job in which you don't know what's coming next. One month it's someone's entire top floor painted as a Jurassic jungle; the next, it's a two-headed Fiji mermaid floating up the stairwell of a museum...

Inspired by films, books and comics - and the essential artist's tool, music - she lives in a self-built log-house suspended over a stream that she designed with husband and business partner Neil and their teenager Django - who was a great help and inspiration with this book.
