Widely celebrated for his amazing graphic presentations, Ching has not
only updated the classic introduction to the principles of building
construction, Building Construction Illustrated, but has teamed up with
two architecture thought leaders to produce European Building
Construction Illustrated, as well as Green Building Illustrated, a
timely and essential introduction to sustainable design and
construction. Already translated into over 16 languages and considered
the gold standard for many universities as well as practicing
professionals, these new guides are perfect for not only students, but
for any professional looking to stay current and reach new levels of
competency and success.

any student’s or professional’s library, containing the most current
knowledge presented in a rich and comprehensive manner that does not

The second title focuses on one of the hottest topics in architecture
and design: sustainable design and construction. As this topic continues
to evolve and grow, students and professionals need a roadmap on this
subject more than ever, and Green Building Illustrated ($49.95; March
2014) provides that essential introduction to sustainable building
design and construction. In the tradition of the classic Building
Construction Illustrated, authors Francis D.K. Ching and Ian M. Shapiro
offer a graphical presentation to the theory, practices, and
complexities of sustainable design using an approach that proceeds
methodically. From the outside to the inside of a building, they cover
all aspects of sustainability, providing a framework and detailed
strategies to design buildings that are significantly green. The book
begins with an explanation of why we need to build green, the theories
behind it, and current rating systems before moving on to a
comprehensive discussion of vital topics. These topics include:
-
Site selection
-
Passive design using building shape
-
Water conservation
-
Ventilation and air quality
-
Heating and cooling
-
Minimum-impact materials, and much more
Explaining all of the fundamental issues of sustainable design and
construction in a beautifully illustrated format, Green Building
Illustrated is ideal for architects, engineers, and builders, as well as
students in these fields.
The third title is the first European edition of Francis D.K. Ching’s
classic visual guide to the basics of building construction, European
Building Construction Illustrated ($60.00; February 2014). This new
European edition focuses on the construction methods most commonly used
in Europe, referring largely to UK Building Regulations overlaid with
British and European, while applying Francis D.K. Ching’s clear graphic
signature style. It provides a coherent and essential primer, presenting
all of the basic concepts underlying building construction and equipping
readers with useful guidelines for approaching any new materials or
techniques they may encounter.
European Building Construction Illustrated provides a comprehensive
presentation of everything from foundations and floor systems to finish
work. Laying out the material and structural choices available, it
provides a full understanding of how these choices affect a building′s
form and dimensions. Complete with more than 1000 illustrations, the
book moves through each of the key stages of the design process, from
site selection to building components, mechanical systems and finishes.
The book also features:
-
Leading environmental assessment methods of BREEAM and LEED, while
outlining the Passive House Standard
-
Emerging construction methods driven by the sustainability agenda,
such as structural insulated panels and insulating concrete formwork
-
A chapter dedicated to construction in the Middle East, focusing on
the Gulf States
Sure to be the standard references on their subject for students,
professionals, and anyone interested in the design and construction of
buildings, all three titles serve as informative, practical, and
graphically beautiful resources. These new releases are now available
