John Wiley & Sons, Inc. today announced the establishment of the Alexis
Walker Award which will honor outstanding research from emerging
scholars in the field of Family Studies. The biannual $5,000 award will
be presented for the first time at the 75th conference of the National
Council on Family Relations in November 2013 in San Antonio.
The new award has been established in the memory of Alexis Walker, an
eminent scholar and pathfinder in Family Studies. Alexis was a visionary
leader and mentor known for the scholarship and service, vitality, and
interdisciplinarity she brought to the scholarship of gender, feminism,
aging mother-adult daughter relationships, and families and health.
“Alexis had a rare combination of intellect, passion, vision, and wisdom
which contributed to her undisputed reputation as one of the greatest
family scholars,” said Margaret Zusky, Associate Publisher, Wiley.
“She was not only a premier scholar, but a wonderful human being. I had
the honor of working with Alexis over many years, benefiting greatly
from her guidance and wisdom. The voice of Alexis Walker will continue
as a guiding force in the field and Wiley's Alexis Walker Award for
emerging scholars will be a steady reminder of her major role in
nurturing young scholars.”
A panel of judges representing Wiley’s society partnerships in this
broad interdisciplinary field will review entries and determine the
award winner. These include the Family Process Institute, the American
Association for Marital and Family Therapy, the American Association of
Family and Consumer Sciences, the Guttmacher Institute, the British
Association for the Study and Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect, the
British Association of Community Child Health, the Swiss Paediatric
Society, the Michigan Association for Infant Mental Health, and the
National Council on Family Relations. Entries are not limited to Wiley
publications.
Katherine Allen will serve as Chair of the inaugural panel of judges.
Dr. Allen is a Professor in the Department of Human Development at
Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. Katherine and Alexis were
collaborators for nearly three decades. Nominations and supporting
details should be submitted to Margaret N. Zusky at Wiley, 350 Main
Street, Malden, Massachusetts 02148 or at mzusky@wiley.com
by July 1, 2013.
