"In these markets, you're either a contrarian, or you're roadkill," says
libertarian free-market advocate and renowned speculator Doug Casey.
His money-making strategy—which he has shared with his readers for over
three decades—is simple: Find serious market distortions and take
advantage of them. Those market distortions, claims Casey, chairman of
investment research firm Casey Research, are more often than not caused
by the incessant meddling in the economy by incompetent, debt-ridden
governments and central banks.
"Whenever possible, a speculator tries to find out what these
distortions are, because their consequences are predictable," says
Casey. "They result in trends you can bet on. It's like the government
is guaranteeing your success, because you can almost always count on the
government to do the wrong thing. The problem is, governments act
chaotically and spastically. So it's hard to predict price movements in
the short term, but you can always bet on the end results of chronic
government stupidity."
In his new book, Right on the Money, Casey makes no secret out of
his contempt for the architects of the current economic turmoil that
grips most of the developed world. Right on the Money (WILEY;
December 2013; Paperback & e-book; ISBN: 978-1-118-85622-2; $22.95)
gives the reader deep insight into the mind of a successful speculator
and self-made multimillionaire, in the form of more than 40 interviews
with his friend and colleague Louis James.
In his inimitable, no-holds-barred style, Casey discusses his thoughts
on the best investment classes and strategies, the Federal Reserve, how
Americans are increasingly stripped of their personal and financial
freedom, how to internationalize one's wealth (and oneself), why the US
government is the greatest danger to Americans today, and much more.
Picking up where Casey's last book, Totally Incorrect, left off, Right
on the Money illustrates the path from basic ideas to actionable
steps that can help investors to not just survive but thrive in today's
turbulent markets.
"I've been called blunt, brash, in your face, offensive, an anarchist
plus a few things we can't print. Call me what you will, but for over 30
years, I've been among the savviest, most successful speculators on the
planet," says Casey.
"I've been right on the money for decades: From the uranium market in
the 1990s to the meteoric rise of gold in the early 2000s, to the
bursting of the housing bubble in 2007 and the financial crash in 2008.
Now, Right on the Money comes at a time when we are suffering the
effects of years of fiscal and monetary mismanagement and seeing our
country's ability to grow and prosper stifled by excessive government
laws and regulations. This book is for everyone who still believes in
life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."
Right on the Money provides the reader with a set of keys for
successfully navigating market volatility and recessions, even a
depression, of which, Casey is convinced, we are in the early stages. It
explores how market distortions impact asset classes such as gold, oil,
and other commodities, as well as real estate and the stock market—and
it hands readers practical (and perfectly legal) tools to protect their
hard-earned money from the long arm of a government mired in ineptitude
and crony capitalism.
"The times ahead are going to be tough on prudent investors, but a boon
for speculators," says Casey. Right on the Money's message
is one of hope for investors and freedom lovers alike.
"Doug Casey is a brilliant speculator with a great understanding of
historical cycles and the keen senses of a coonhound. If you want to
learn how to make money, you have to think like someone who
instinctively knows how to make money—and Doug is a prime example for
that rarest of species. Right on the Money's perfect concoction
of personal experience, sound investment advice, and irreverent
viewpoints is the next best thing to sitting face to face with Doug."
