Engaging Teachers in Evaluation Reform
By Ellen Behrstock-Sherratt , Allison Rizzolo , Sabrina W. Laine , Will Friedman
Too often, teachers' voices are left out when new teacher evaluation
systems are designed and implemented, and this is often the reason why
many education reforms sputter or run into controversy. If states and
districts want effective and sustainable teacher evaluation systems,
teachers must be brought to the table for policy conversations.
EVERYONE AT THE TABLE (Jossey-Bass; 978-1-118-52634-7;
June 2013)provides a research-based methodology, clear strategies
and practical materials for engaging teachers in productive,
solutions-oriented dialogue about teacher evaluation. The book provides
a means for overcoming that frustration and harmful rhetoric to make
real progress on evaluation reform and presents a path forward that will
help reinvigorate the teaching profession by starting with the teacher.
Additionally, EVERYONE AT THE TABLE includes information on
how to:
-
Cultivate teacher leadership
-
Measure teacher effectiveness
-
Develop strategies for authentic engagement in evaluation reform
-
Engage teachers in other critical education policy solutions
A companion Web-based resource, with video resources for teachers and
school and district leaders, enhances the collaborative approach
outlined in the book and is available at www.everyoneatthetable.org.
Linda Darling-Hammond, Charles E. Ducommun Professor of Teaching
and Teacher Education, Stanford University, said "In all of the current
cacophony about teacher evaluation reform, the most important voices
have often been lost. Accomplished teachers who know teaching and are
committed to developing a strong profession know what is needed to
improve practice. This book describes how to ensure these voices are at
the table in a meaningful way."
Teachers and education leaders alike are growing frustrated at the lack
of satisfactory progress on teacher evaluation reform. EVERYONE AT
THE TABLE is the must-have first step in having teacher’s
voices heard in the ongoing conversation on education reform.
