Fresh analysis on economic power balance shift between China and the West and its implications for the global economy

01/30/2012

Leading economist, expert and writer on the Asian and international economy, business, and politics, Ivan Tselichtchev, presents a comprehensive picture of the changing balance of power between emerging China and the "old" developed economies of the West (US, Europe and Japan) in his new book, China Versus the West: The Global Power Shift of the 21st Century. He specifies those areas where China has become the world leader, the areas where it is catching up and those areas where the West retains its superiority and has a chance to strengthen it further.

China Versus the West reveals a breathtaking story of today’s global economy which is non-"West-led" and where major growth dynamics are coming from China, India and other large emerging economies around the world.

According to Tselichtchev, a radically changing economic environment poses enormous challenges for the West requiring a set of new government policies and business strategies. Using his own analytical framework, Tselichtchev presents a spectrum of options and alternatives for Western businesses to respond to China's emergence as the world’s leading producer and exporter.

The book showcases an innovative view on China’s model of capitalism, showing that the major vector of its transformation towards a greater role of private companies and more market, competition and freedom for enterprises. This, however, is combined with a strategic emphasis on the “market-style state-owned companies”, well-equipped to compete both domestically and globally.

A major theme discussed in the book is the crucial role of the financial and economic crisis of 2008-2009 in accelerating the global power shift in China’s favor. Tselichtchev explains that the global crisis was not global at all. He argues that above all it was the deepest crisis of Western capitalism, underscoring the fact that today’s China is stronger than the West both structurally and macroeconomically.

The book picks up five major areas where the West’s and China’s economic interests clash:

Trade and exchange rate of the yuan

Environmental

Natural resources

Technologies

Company acquisitions

In each areas, the book diagnoses the West-China economic power shift, answering to the four key questions: “In what areas?”, “How big and how fast?”, “Why?” and “What to do?”

In the Epilogue, the author defines this shift as part of the formation of the multi-polar world presenting strong arguments why, in spite of its impressive rise, China will never become the sole world leader. The times when one-nation dominance was possible are gone.

Drawing on the author’s unique background that offers alternative insights into this crucial turning point in the global economy and politics,China Versus the West is a must read for everyone who wants to know more about the global developments, China and the West.
