Appreciative Inquiry in Higher Education: A Transformative Force

12/10/2012

Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is about making positive changes in the world and this is especially useful when analyzing what higher education means. More extensive use of the appreciative inquiry approach can have an exponential impact on the next generation of positive change makers in the world.

In APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY IN HIGHER EDUCATION (Jossey-Bass, 2012) co-authors Jeanie Cockell and Joan McArthur-Blair build on the foundations of AI and show how it can be used to help leaders, faculty and organizational developers achieve new and evolving goals. They explain the benefits and value of using Appreciative Inquiry. It focuses on getting more of what is positive, to respond effectively to the tumultous changes in higher education.

This book is developed in two parts. The first section provides unique stories and practical guidance on how AI can be applied in higher education and provides practitioners with concepts, frameworks and agendas. The second part is a deeper look at certain aspects of Appreciative Inquiry that have a specific link into higher education. It provides practitioners with theoretical concepts to ground their work.

The author of Appreciative Leadership and The Power of Appreciative Inquiry, Ph.D., Diana Whitneysaid,"Cockell and McArthur-Blair have crafted a meaningful story for educational leaders by weaving their personal experiences as Appreciative Inquiry facilitators together with a wide range of strength-based practices and positive change theory. The result is a magical book for applying Appreciative Inquiry in higher education."

Designed as both a thought-provoking and practical resource, APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY IN HIGHER EDUCATIONreveals why AI is such a vital process and shows what it takes to apply AI to such tasks as planning, summits, developing collaborative teams, teaching and learning. The book shows how AI links to the positive psychology work that has influenced educational approaches in the first decade of the 21st century.
