HOBOKEN, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A. Thomas McLellan, Ph.D., the top federal official on addiction treatment, has informed Wiley newsletter Alcoholism & Drug Abuse Weekly that he is going to leave the Office of National Drug Control Policy sometime early this summer. “There’s no deep dark secret here -- I’m just ill-suited to government work,” he told ADAW editor Alison Knopf on April 15. He emphasized that he was not dissatisfied with the mission or the personnel or the drug strategy (which has not been released yet).
McLellan had chosen Alcoholism & Drug Abuse Weekly for his first interview in the office last year after being sworn in as deputy director of the ONDCP.
“Treatment of addiction is no different from treatment of any other illness. Ideally, the federal government’s rules, regulations, and financing ought to be consonant with the best practices,” McLellan stated in the earlier interview which also outlined proposed changes in current provider care he hoped to see.
